The practicality of living on a homestead with no car (or drivers license)

There are times when I wonder, is driving worth it anymore? Oh, I enjoy the convenience. But it's getting more and more expensive, and more and more dangerous out there. I like it less every time I drive.

I have known a few people over the years that don't drive, some of which never even had a license. They somehow managed to get along pretty well. Most of them weren't terribly far out in the sticks, though.
