Vital records – need to be originals or copies OK?

I want to put together all my important paperwork in one fireproof, waterproof kind of enclosure. Something for when I have to bug out or evacuate or god forbid, the house burns down…again, (happened once already). Do vital records need to be originals or will copies do? I am thinking things like birth certificates, house title, car titles, marriage license, copies of passports and drivers licenses etc. Do I want to make scans onto a thumb drive too?

This is "Bad Frank" Phillips in photo below. Pike County lawman and killer of Hatfields. "Bad Frank" was my great-grandfather's nephew. Frank's dad and my great-grandfather were brothers.

You may, or may not have friendlies along your route who could possibly provide temporary shelter. It just depends on what has happened to them…
