m48A stock question.

I acquired an M48A in absolutely pristine condition. it still has cosmoline in the bolt, and I strongly suspect that it's never been fired.
My concern is the stock. It feels rough. Really rough. Should I give it a light sand to clean up the finish, is the rough stock a Yugo thing?

I've seen SKS Yugos that had the same thing going on as far as the stock being rough.

It has survived since the 1950's like it is. Does anyone know how these stocks were finished?
