Are you prepared for GPS going offline?

It's been more than a few years since I was in school but the basics of the internet suggest that it is almost impossible to take down the internet short of an EMP. I would be interested in the opinions of those of you that are smarter than I am about if the internet could be taken offline without creating serious damage to the structure itself?

Scenario: EMP strike or Carrington Event:

• 60+ years of age
• MAX walk of 35-50 miles home
• moderate arthritis, but no other health issues
• self defense provisions
• food, water, first aid, shelter considerations for approximately 72hrs in warm/cold weather

This isnt political, its alot more personal than that. It always is. If you are on the recieving end, do your preps / skills come into play in getting to the other side of it. It sounds like Mexico (maybe) and US are going to go after the cartels. Obviously they are a ruthless killing organization. But what are their capabilities as far as terrorism? Or who can they align with for terrorist purposes? I am thinking along the lines of power grid physical sabotage or sabotaging water supplies or other large scale calamities.
